“…………… I come in and wait?”
“Sorry, it’s too crowded in here.”
“The bus is late again.”
“I think we ……………. at school on time.”
I never thought I could do it, but finally I got courageous enough to speak in public. My English teacher gave the assignment at the beginning of the semester. We had to speak for three minutes in front of the class, and it worried me for about two months.
I have always been afraid of making a speech in public. Maybe that’s because I’m a shy person. Anyway, I wrote all of my ideas on note cards. I practiced my speech with my notes in front of a mirror, in front of my pet cat, and in front of my husband. Would I be able to make my speech in front of my class, too?
When the day of my speech arrived, I was ready. As I reached the microphone, I looked at my audience and smiled. Then I looked down at my note cards. At that moment, I realized that I had the wrong information. These were the notes for my biology test not the information about my speech! I closed my eyes and tried to be confident. Suddenly, I began the speech. To my surprise, the words just came out of my mouth.
Most musicians agree that the best violins were first made in Cremona, Italy, about 200 years ago. These violins sound better than violins made today. Violin makers and scientists haven’t been successful in making instruments which resemble the Italian violins. Musicians still prefer the old ones. No one really knows why they are so good, but many people think they have an answer.
Some people think it is the age of the violins. They suggest that today’s violins will also sound wonderful someday. Unfortunately, not all old violins sound wonderful. So age cannot be the answer.
Others consider that perhaps the violin makers of Cremona knew something special about the type of wood used to make the violins.
It may also be important to cut the wood a special way. It has to be the right size and shape. The smallest difference will alter the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this was the secret of the Italians.
In general, there may never be other violins like the ones made in Cremona. Their secret may be lost forever!
